What is the 6x86?

(back to Frequently Asked Questions)  (back to Cyrix/IBM 6x86 FAQs)  What is the 6x86?

The 6x86 was the first very successful processor design by Cyrix (manufactured by IBM).  The 6x86 is no longer in production, but is still very common.  It was the lowest-cost and best performing processor in its category during its time.  It still offers performance comparable to Pentium classic processors, while running at lower clock speeds (results in the use of the PRating).  The 6x86, while not as stable or fast as its successor, the 6x86MX, is still a good upgrade chip and can occasionally be found used at reasonable prices.

For a descriptive review of the 6x86, pleases refer to the "Cyrix/IBM 6x86 Review".
